Captain Bob Green Meet Capt. Steve “Zippy” Dahl

Zippy has been guiding ice fishing trips for over 20 years. One of the founding members of the famous Perch Patrol, Zippy himself has become a Devils Lake legend. And after a few hours on the ice, he may even tell you how he earned his nickname.

Yellow Perch (Perca flavescens)

Also referred to as lake perch, they’re generally 4-10 inches long with a yellow or brass-colored body with dark vertical stripes. In deep lakes, schools of hundreds are common and make for action-packed fishing.

Devils Lake’s water level has gradually risen by more than 30 feet since the 1980s, causing massive floods as the lake continued to grow. Captain Zippy and Crew put their fish house directly above a line of submerged trees, but finding the structure hidden below the surface is only half the battle. The abundance of freshwater shrimp means Devils Lake perch are well fed and less aggressive. Crew and Zippy had to finesse jig and keep an eye on the depth finder to coax the perch into striking, ultimately relying on their sensitive ice rods to detect the delicate bites.

Before snowmobiles and trucks appeared on the ice, the best way to access the fishing grounds was man’s best friend. Crew visited the lakeside home of longtime mushers Roger and Nancy Johnson to meet the dogs and learn the ropes from teen racer Michaela Osborne. After hitching a ride with Michaela, Crew and his eager team of dogs explore across the lake.
